Alternatives Without Compromise
In realizing more freedom and self-sufficiency, we must understand that this goal requires variety within the total portfolio. In other words, in most circumstances no one specific system is going to fully do the job--or at least not do it well in a comprehensive and cost-effective manner. This is a fact that will be reiterated on just about every page of this site.
Wind Power is an excellent case in point. Wind turbines in various applications and locales provide a very effective supplement to round out the alternative energy package. Wind turbines, however, are usually not all that effective as a stand-alone provider.
There are also a number of practical elements to consider in regard to the use of wind turbines. The prime consideration is your location. Turbines are a little noisy, tall, and need fairly high average wind speeds to be truly effective. They also need to be 30 feet above anything within 300' to avoid turbulence.
So, if perhaps you live near the top of a hill or a rise that is a relatively open area with significant consistent wind speeds (at least seasonally), then you might want to consider incorporating wind power into your energy mix. Wind power in this scenario can help compensate for cloudy days (if you're using solar panels) or to roll the meter back during periods of high winds. Wind power is comparably less expensive to install and doesn't require significant maintenance if done right.
This site Other Power provides the best information we've found so far along with instructions on how to build and install your own wind turbine. These are very well constructed and time-tested turbines. They also provide the pre-assembled kits at a very competitive price.
